This course provides outdoor recreational instruction on the concepts of backpacking and outdoor survival skills. Respect for our natural enviroment will be stressed and participants will be provided supervised backpacking experiences in the wilderness. New Mexico Junior College will provide backpacks, frames, cook stove, cookware, tents, sleeping bags, and compass for those who need them. The student must supply clothing, personal items, food, rain gear, and survival kit. The cost of these items is approximately $50 to $75. Participants need to be aware this is a streneous physical activity class. You need to be in fair physical condition for hiking and backpacking. Please read:  Class meets Monday nights July 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 and August 12. The backpacking and camping trip is July 31 - August 4 to the Pagosa Springs, Colorado. It will include visiting the beautiful community, hot springs, and 4 mile Hike. Then travel to Lake Heron in northern New Mexico to camp before returning to Hobbs. Cost is $129 per camper. Space is limited.
