This outdoor recreational course is designed to introduce students to the basics of rope climbing and rappelling. Knots, types of rope, various climbing systems, rigging, rappelling, belaying, and climbing will be the focus of the course. Proper technique will be emphasized with safety as the main priority. Practical application in the gym and in the field will be required. Basic caving etiquette and principles will be discussed. The final rappelling and climbing experience will take place cliff side and in a cave in the Guadalupe Mountains. Participants should be in good physical condition. Comfortable non-marking hiking boots/shoes or athletic shoes are necessary for the practical activities. Leather gloves that fit appropriately are required. A collared shirt is required for the first day in the gym. A simple back pack will be required for the cave trip. A flashlight, batteries, and another light source will be required for the cave trip. Food & water will be required for all day long activities. A positive attitude, sense of adventure, and ability to laugh at yourself is also required!!!
