This is a physical education activity course that provides instruction in and practice of basic Pilates mat-work techniques. Pilates conditioning is designed to develop long, lean muscles along with flexibility and a healthy mind and body. Pilates was developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates. Pilates called his method "Contrology." "Study carefully. Appropriate dress for physical exercise. Comfortable or lose fitting clothing. An athletic shoe is not necessary since class will be performed barefooted. Socks may be worn, however they may cause sliding in some position. If you are more comfortable using your own Yoga/Pilates mat, you are encouraged to bring it, however mats are provided.
Upon completion of this couse, students should be able to:
1. demonstrate basic understanding of Pilates techniques including concentration, control, center, fluidity, precision, and breath.
2. demonstrate understanding of basic exercise, movement, and biomechanical principles.
3. identify basic anatomical landmarks relevant to Pilates training.
4. demonstrate correct posture and alignment and identify incorrect posture.
